notes | From Companion to Gaelic Scotland – “Alasdair Mór Under this pseudonym Iain N MacLeòid contributed a column, ‘Litir à Beàrnaraigh’, to the Stornoway Gazette from 1917 to 1954. A native of Skye, he was schoolmaster in Bernera for a period and used his well-known local personages as the ‘characters’ in his ‘letters’, which dealt with local and general Gaelic topics. The column was read avidly, and a collection entitled Litrichean Alasdair Mhóir was published in 1932. MacLeòid was an important contributor to Gaelic periodicals and edited a collection of Lewis verse, Bàrdachd Leòdhais (1916).” Father of Major C. I. N. MacLeod. |
