Barraigh

Tobar nan Ceann

Tha beul-aithris ag innse gu robh batal air Eilean Fùideigh agus gun deach na cinn a chur bho thriùir dhe na saighdearan, no Lochlannaich, ’s gun deach na cinn aca a chur dhan tobair seo.

S ann aig Nan NicFhionghain ann a Bhatarsaigh a chuala mi an toiseach na sgeulachdan a bha ag ainmeachadh cinn dhaoine an cois thobraichean. Ged is ann mu Fhùideighs mu na Lochlannaich a thòisich i, thàinig i an uair sin gu Mòr nan Ceann. Anns na sgeulachdan sin bhiodh i ag ainmeachadh Tobar nan Ceann, Tobar aChinn agus Tobar Mòr nan Ceann, ach cha robh lorg idir aice air an tobair fhèin.

Aon sgeul a bha aices e gur e ban-tighearna MhicNèill a bha ann am Mòr nan Ceann agus gu bheil i air a h-amhlacadh air Eilean Uineasain ri taobh Caibeal Moire nan Ceann no Cill Bhrianain. Bha aice gun do dhòrdaich Mòr an ceann a chur bho thriùir dhaoine, ’s gun nigh ise na cinn an Tobar

[67] Bharra mus deach an tiodhlacadh, ’s gun dfhuair a mac fhèin, Ruaraidh, na cheann-cinnidh.

Ach bha diofarversions’ (mun canadh i fhèin) aice dhen sgeul seo: cuid dhiubh gu math toinnte agus annasach (faic Ross, 1961, 1962). Bha àite aig tobar anns gach sgeòil, agus trì chinn ann an cliabh, agus ceann a bhruidhneadh, agus ceann no cinn gan cur ann an tobair. Tha fios gur e mìrean de sheann bheul-aithris a thagainn an seo, agus tobraichean is cinn air an cur còmhla.

Tobar aDhùgain NF 6702

Tha an tobar seo ann am Bealach aDhùgain, seachad air an Dubharaidh am Baile na Creige, agus mu choinneimh aChrìochain. Chaidh an tobar a bheannachadh leis an Ath. Dermont Duggan, dhòighs gum biodh i aig muinntir Bharraigh airson òl aiste, agus taic is eadhar-ghuidhe iarraidh buaithe-san.

Chaidh Dermont Duggan a chur a Bharraigh leis an an Naomh Vincent de Paul ann an 1650, oir cha robh sagart air a bhith nam measg airson faisg air ceithir fichead bliadhna.

(Ghabh an Ath-leasachadh àite ann an 1560).

Tobar Bharra

[69]

Tobar Bharra NF 706075

Tha i seo air tobar cho ainmeils a tha anns na h-Eileanan an Iar.

Tha i air taobh an ear an rathaid, aig Cille Bharra. ’S e tobar bhrèagha a thinnte, le grunnd gainmhich is cumadh snasail, ’s an t-uisge aspùtadh suas à trì sùilean na grunnd. Tha mòran beul-aithris mu a timcheall. Bha ri ràdh gur e an Naomh Barra fhèin a rinn i; gun chuir e a chromag trì uairean dhan talamhs gun dhfhosgail na trì sùilean uisge, nach do thràigh a-riamh on sin.

Tobar air Beinn Eòlagaraidh NF 702074

Tha tobar shuas faisg air mullach Beinn Eòlagaraidh, agus ged nach eil fhios air an ainm aice, tha i na meadhan air beul-aithris sònraichte a tha air nochdadh am mòran leabhraichean eachdraidh cho fada air ais ris na 1600an. ’S e seo sgeulachd nan coilleag.

Ann an leabhar eachdraidh Boece an 1527 tha e atoirt cunntas air coilleagan a bhith ann an tobar ann am Muile. Ach cha bfhada gus na nochd an sgeul am Barraigh.

[70]

Dhe na cunntasan tràth, ’s e cunntas Dean Monro (1594) as ainmeile: “In the north end of this countrey of Barray there is ane heich know. Upon the heid of this know thair is ane spring and fresh water well. This well trewlie springis up certane little round quhyte things likest to the shape, figure and form on ane little Cockle as it appeirit to me. ”
(73-74).

Tha aithris eile, mun aon àm (ann am MacFarlane, 1630) ga chur: “Ther is one litle spring and fresh water running out of ane grein hill above the Church, which doeth flow into the sea. And there are spring and there certane litill Cockle shells which they alleadge that the samen doth flow into the sea out of the Well and doeth grow in another place next the Church not the tenth part of ane myll from the Church of Barray called Kilbarray.” Tha an sgeul afàs caran duilich a leantainn.

Tha cuid dhe na cunntasan acur na tobrach shìos air achòmhnard – ’s dòcha Tobar Bharra, mar as aithne dhuinne i. Mar eiseimpleir, tha cunntas nas traithe na 1600, ann an Skene, ag ràdh: “Item, in this Ile (Barraigh) is ane weill quhairin growis cockles, quhilk is at the fute of ane hill callit the Hill of Barra, twa mile fra the sea. ”

[71]

Bha Màrtainn Màrtainn e fhèin am Barraigh, agus chaidh e gu Tobar Bharra: “And they say that the Well of Kilbar throws up embryoes of cockles, but I did not discern any in the rivulet, the air being at that time foggy. ” (158). An dùil an ann chun na tobrach ceàrr a chaidh e!

Tha an sgeulachd aleantainn chun an againn fhèin. Bha Alasdair Alpin MacGregor (1929) dhen bheachd gun lorg e am freagart: “The spring which is identified locally as being the one that threw upembryoes of cocklesis situated within three or four yards of the summit of Ben Eoligarry The water in it is charged with calcium carbonate, which is deposited on sand grains and similar objects, thus giving rise to the superstition that the water contained minute cockles. ” (276). Seo a-nise dhuibh.

Agus tha MacGregor (1929) cuideachd ag ràdh: “Apart from the Well of Kilbar, whence the cockles found in such immense quatities on the Tràigh Mhòr were supposed to have been carried down, the Well of St Mary and the Well of St. Barr are the only sources of fresh water in this vicinity. ” (316). Mar sin, an e Tobar Cille Bharra tha shuas air Beinn Eòlagaraidh agus an e Tobar Naomh Barra an leis

[72] aghrunnd ghainmhich? Ach càite bheil Tobar Mhoire, Well of St Mary, air an astar seo?

Agus tha sgeula eile mu thobair air an astar seo, ach chan eil cinnt an . Tha cunntas ann am MacFarlane (1630) atoirt luaidh air tachartas a bha MacNèill Bharraigh agus seann duine ag innses acreidsinn: “There is also a spring of fresh water. When appearance of Warrs wer to be in the Countrey of Barray that certaine drops of blood hath oftymes bein sein in this spring and fresh Water Well. Lykewise whenever appearance of peace wold be in the Countrie That certain little bitts of Peitts wold be seen. ”

Eadar na coilleagans an fhuil, tha na sgeulachdan mu na tobraichean mun cuairt Chille Bharra cho annasach ri gin a chluinneas sinn mu thobair sam bith.

[73]

Tobar Cùl Beinn an Oib NF 6902

S e tobar slàinte a tha seo, anns aGheann Dorcha. Bhiodh daoine adol thuice airson an slàinte. Dhinnis à Buaile nam Bodach mar a bha fear anns abhaile sin adol chun na tobrach airson leigheas fhads a dheigheadh aige air.

[75]

Tobar Chaluim Chille NF 649996

Tha i seo ann an Tangasdal faisg air Loch Thangasdail, ann an àite ris an can iad aBheirbh. Tobar air leth brèagha tha seo, ’s i mòr le cliathaichean gainmhich: tha an t-uisge aice air leth cruaidh.

S e tobar iarrtais agus tobar beannachaidh a bha seo. Bha Nan Eachainn à Bhatarsaigh ag aithris nam biodh dad a dhìth ort nach robh agad ach a dhol thuice agus iarrtas a dhèanamh, agus gum faigheadh tu e. Bhiodh daoine atighinn thuice airson beannachadh, gu h-àraid ro thuras; leithid clann-nighean achutaidh - bhiodh iad atighinn thuice Didòmhnaich mum falbhadh iad. Cuideachd bhiodh càraidean atighinn thuice aig an robh dùil pòsadh ach aig nach robh gu leòr gus an ath sheusan: thigeadh iad chun na tobrach air Didòmhnaich a thoirt an geallaidh nach biodh iad aig duine eile.

Nuair a bha mòran iasgairean atighinn a-steach a Bharraigh, bhiodh iasgairean Bucach (Brethren) atighinn chun na tobrach a h-uile Sàbaid. Bhiodh iasgairean Bharraigh fhèin cuideachd adol thuice gach Dòmhnach a dhòl aiste, an dòchas gum faigheadh iad am barrachd èisg ri linn, tron t-seachdain.

[76]

Tha Màrtainn Màrtainn (1696) ag innse: “There is another well not far from Tangstill, which the inhabitants say in a fertile year throws up many grains of barley in July and August. ” (157).

Tobar nam Buadh NF 665979

Tha i seo am broinn Caisteal Chiosmul am Bàgh aChaisteil. Tha e air leth annasach tobar fìor-ghlan a bhith ann an creig mara, agus bha seo aciallachadh gur e àite-dìon air leth a bhanns achaisteal seo. Bha uisge na tobrach seo ainmeil mar leigheas airson na banachdaich.

Tobar Chaluim Chille NL 565833

Tha i seo ann an Eilean Mhiùlaigh.Tha i faisg air Cill Chaluim Chille, agus an t-uisge atighinn a-mach às achreig. Bha am fiosrachadh seo aig Nan Eachainn Fhionnlaigh ann am Bhatarsaigh.

Tobar Chaluim Chille

Tha beul-aithris ag innse gu robh i seo an Ceann Bharraigh, ach chan eil lorg oirre a-nis.
